Karla Lopez-Martinez began her
career in the beauty industry in 1998. “As I graduated high school and was faced with career choices and questions, I knew one thing for sure – I wanted to own my own business! But, what kind of business? Well I loved the beauty industry, I loved the personal connection, the fun, the creativity, the freedom, and the opportunity to follow or create whatever path you wanted. It made me excited to be able to own a business in such a fun and valuable industry! So I enrolled in cosmetology school! I didn’t know when, how or with what financial backing, but I knew someday I would own my own salon – that was my ultimate goal!” Karla shares.

Her career began at Gila Rut Salon, where she started as an assistant and moved into a colourist position. She then became an educator in the company and finally an owner. In 2006, Karla had the opportunity to partner with Gila Rut Salon in opening their second location in the South Bay at Otay Ranch Town Center in 2006. Then in 2011, she helped in opening their third location, in the North Country at Torrey Hills Town Center. This location was then dissolved, faced with the challenges of the global Covid-19 pandemic.

“During my journey in the beauty industry I’ve been blessed with learning many lessons and have discovered deeper, clearer passions.

One of my passions in particular is elevating those around me, through education and mentorship.

It is an honor to see people transform, discover their own vision, set their own goals and reach potentials they never imagined for themselves. That is what sings to my soul. That is what I live for!” Karla shares.

Her passion for continued education and mentorship has now become her mission. As one of the founders and creators of Beauty Backbone Inc., Her current goal is to empower others in the industry to reach new potentials in their own career journey. “I’m extremely grateful for all the opportunities I have been privileged to have in my career, and through that, in my personal life. I’m excited to share my experiences, my lessons, my vision, and my passion with everyone that is ready to play and stretch to new heights!” states Karla.

Karla’s training has been with top industry icons: Aveda, Toni & Guy, Vidal Sassoon, L’Oreal, Paul Brown, Qnity, Brendon Bruchards high performance academy, Vinh Giang STAGE Academy, SDSU marketing program and Landmark in the U.S., Europe, Canada and Mexico. Her expertise also includes appearances on Univision and Telemundo morning shows, Salon Trainer conference and as a frequent guest presenter and educator at cosmetology schools, Paul Mitchell Schools, Aveda Institutes and Marinello Schools of Beauty.
